If you have a child with autism, then you may know how their dental appointments might be an overwhelming experience. It’s filled with sights, sounds, and feelings that they may not be entirely familiar with. However, while they may be uncomfortable for some kids, there are things you can do to make these visits to their dentist a bit easier! Keep reading to learn three tips to help your child feel more comfortable during their trip.

Tip #1: Explain Each Step of the Visit to Your Child

A great way to help your child prepare for their upcoming visit is to explain each step of the appointment. Every detail is important, so they know what to fully expect. You can tell them about showing up at the office, sitting down in the waiting area, and then being taken to the treatment room. Many kids may benefit from being shown pictures of the office itself or being told stories about another child’s visit to the dentist. This will help them not be surprised by anything when it’s time for their trip.

Tip #2: Visit or Call the Office Beforehand

When it comes to visiting a new office for the first time, it can be stressful for your child, but also for you! By scheduling a meet and greet for you and your loved one, you both get a chance to meet the dentist and staff to see how they interact with each other and their patients. Your child can get familiar with the setting and start knowing what to expect with noise level, sights, and smells.

You may not be able to schedule a visit like this if you’re busy, so calling the office can be helpful as well. You can talk to the front desk team about your child’s specific needs and preferences. Asking about the accommodations they can provide can help you and your kid feel more comfortable as they get the care they deserve.

Tip #3: Bring A Comfort Item from Home

Does your child have a favorite plushie? Maybe they find some comfort in a weighted blanket or noise-cancelling headphones, but you may be able to bring one with you! These may seem like small items, but they can make a big difference in your loved one. Children with autism often benefit from them because having something familiar with them can make them feel a bit calmer.

By following any of these tips or doing what you know works for your child, you can help make regular dental visits a bit easier! That way, they can get the care they deserve and keep their growing smiles happy.
