What Can You Expect During a Dental Checkup & Cleaning?
Whether you have an energetic toddler at home, a school-aged child, or a teen, we will do everything we can to provide them with the highest quality of care possible. Here’s what you can expect for different age ranges.
Checkups & Cleanings for Toddlers
For infants and toddlers, it’s important to start bringing them into the dental office by the time they are one year of age, or their first tooth erupts (whichever happens first!). During their appointment, we will examine their teeth, gums, and bite. Once their exam is complete, we will thoroughly clean their teeth and answer any questions you have regarding at-home oral care and other topics.
Checkups and Cleanings for Children
When your child’s primary teeth start falling out and their adult teeth begin erupting, we will monitor their progress and development. During your child’s visits, we will continue to examine their teeth, gums, and bite, checking for signs of tooth decay and gum disease. Their hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from their teeth and gums. We will also keep an eye out for alignment issues so they can be treated as soon as possible.
Checkups & Cleanings for Teens
After your child has all of their permanent teeth, we will continue to keep an eye on their smile. During your teen’s visits, we will check for any issues and also thoroughly clean their teeth, removing plaque and tartar along the way. Their hygienist will also polish their teeth to remove surface stains and leave their pearly whites squeaky clean!
What Is a Radiation-Free Decay Detection Tool?
During your child’s cleaning and checkup visit, we use a radiation-free decay detection tool to help our team effectively detect cavities that are very difficult to see with the naked eye. Using a high-magnification intraoral camera, we can identify decay in even small areas. This way, we don’t need to poke and prod around your child’s mouth. This tool offers numerous benefits when compared to traditional methods, including:
- Zero radiation emitted
- Allows us to detect fractures, defects, and decay
- More effective than traditional exams
- Greater accuracy in locating and addressing issues
What About Fluoride?
Thanks to the extensive, published, reproducible research and data available today, our team at Sheer Smiles Kids believes that fluoride use in dentistry is perfectly safe and effective at preventing dental decay for children. However, we understand that not all parents are comfortable with the use of fluoride. In these situations, we may recommend one of our wellness plans that provides a more cost-effective means for more frequent checkups and cleanings to offset any increased risk of dental decay. If you have any questions or concerns regarding fluoride use and its benefits, don’t hesitate to bring them up to us.
